Billy was born in
Glasgow 55 years ago; his father went off to war and his mother
left when he was four, leaving the wee lad with a pair of aunts.
He did badly at school and became a welder in Clydesides
shipyards.
He found fame as a
comedian with his touring Great Northern Welly Boot Show, when
he dressed in a leotard and wore banana-style wellies. By 1974
he was being flown to Germany to cheer up the Scottish World Cup
football team. These days hes a TV tourist in the Arctic,
Scotland and most recently in Billy Connollys World Tour
of Australia.
Now he has become
a serious actor in "Mrs Brown" and on British TV in
"Deacon Brodie" which tells the story of a notorious
18th-century carpenter. Not that Brodie was notorious
for his carpentry - it was more the scandalous boozing, wenching
and stealing that got peoples backs up.
